Unbelievable, so many projects are coming together today, its incredible to watch and be part of- particularly considering how sensitive and responsive so many of them are to the environment.

Trying to pin people down into solid ideas of where these projects could go next though… lots of really great talk but I just really don’t want it to end there. Could any of these projects be the beginnings of sustainable artworks, do any of these collaborations have futures as collectives, has this residency actually come up with any solutions to the problems facing emerging artists? 2 days to go… I know a week is not a long time to come up with any answers or even to realise the answers that we may have discovered, but I can’t help but think that similar conversations must be being had between emerging artists all the time, everywhere- through Crash I wanted to bring the people having those conversations together and then to find the next step. Action. I think that probably follows, once we’re done being cold, and knackered, and in the moment. Reflection, lasting contact.

Ok. Feel like I’m settling in. I am catching up with the number of things to do, and am spotting vague amounts of free time. The speakers have been invaluable to this process. I feel like every day each speaker is shining a new light on what we are doing here- making us question the work we are doing in completely different ways each time. For me it’s throwing up some issues with how I’ve organised Crash- but there’s many things that I would change if I were to do this again. I want to make it an annual event partly to see how I could improve on what I’ve done this time.

The participants have been unbelievably fantastic. I’ve tried to rewrite the following sentence so many times that I’m giving up: basically they’re ace. I feel extremely privileged to be working alongside them and I hope that some of the incredible projects that they are working on can be followed through to become sustainable and rewarding artworks.

Sat in Trawden camping barn with my face burning slightly from finally being warm for the first in what feels like weeks. Everyone is quiet and there is music playing from one corner of the room. Typing away.

On Saturday, before this week started, I felt pretty nervous…. Waiting to find out what was going to go wrong, what I’d have missed, how many people were going to injure themselves or get lost. Now… I think I’m settling into it a bit more. Plenty of things have gone wrong so far- the generator ran out of fuel and I nearly gassed everyone to death with the heater, we emergency relocated to the library, the door came off its hinges, I massively underestimated the necessity of tea and coffee- but… I’m learning, and, if I survive the week, would probably do it again- so far. The group are great. Everyone seems to be finding their place, finding a way of working, or just a way of coping (it has been pretty extreme so far). Some fantastic ideas have been coming out and everyone seems really enthused by Kerry’s ethical practice talk earlier. Over dinner last night it kind of sounded like some people might continue Crash afterwards- either by forming their own collectives, or running the programme again elsewhere… I still feel in a pretty hyper-state, but I’m enjoying it so far.
